There are many things you can get/do with your SNAP benefits. You can buy food. You can buy plants to start a home garden (note: deer repellent/anti-gopher fencing not included). You can't, however, buy your four-legged household member something to eat nor can you purchase things like toothpaste or toilet paper. This presents many issues for many families in our region and beyond. I volunteer at the Friendship APL - this area's largest animal shelter- and many animals are dropped off because owners can no longer afford the price of dog or cat food. Some of these animals are dropped off at night with or without notes explaining their situations (poor Tippy was tied to a dog house in the middle of night). The shelter provides many families with bags or cans of food and hopes to establish a pet food pantry in the near future. If you are in Lorain County and know of someone who is in an emergency situation and is having trouble feeding furry family members, give Friendship APL a call. If you are interested in volunteering, the shelter's next volunteer orientation is September 11th- keep your calendar open!
About the household items issue: for all you Huron County folk: there is a non-food pantry coming up in mid-September. The information is below, please feel free to disseminate!
"Still and all, why bother? Here's my answer. Many people need desperately to receive this message: I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people do not care about them. You are not alone." -Vonnegut
