The Great Recession has had startling effects on Richland County residents.
Richland County Job & Family Services have seen a 30% jump in application for assistance in the past year. Currently, nearly 47,000 residents in Richland County are receiving cash, food, or health care assistance, which amounts to a little under 40% of the county.
In addition to JFS, many local food pantries are also experiencing a record number of people in their food lines. One food pantry in particular, Grace Episcopal Church in Mansfield, is providing food to more than 600 families a week.
